Solve the Identity Theft Problem: Reform Immigration

Every 2 seconds someone becomes a victim of identity theft in America – this problem has become an epedemic.

Identity theft in America goes hand-in-hand with illegal immigration. To get a job, illegal immgrants need a Social Security number. About 7,000,000 illegal immigrants are currently using stolen SSNs just to be able to work in the USA. That’s 7 million people who were unnecessarily victimized.

This Pew Research Poll shows many want to restrict illegal immigration even further than it is now. Madness.

The average victim of immigrant-based identity theft sees their Social Security number shared about 30 times – this number gets passed on to family and close friends so they can simply work. This can have huge consequences for the victim. In an extreme case, a woman in Nevada got hit with a $1 million back-tax bill, even though she was a stay-at-home mom. 218 illegal aliens were using her Social Security number.

The top five states in terms of reported identity theft all have large immigrant populations: the border states of Arizona, California, and Texas, as well as Florida and Nevada.

Stolen identities are easy to get and suprisingly cheap. In Arizona the “3 pack” -a Social Security card, driver’s license, and permanent resident card costs an average of $160.

Criminals make plenty of money off of immigration as long as its illegal. If we don’t get some kind of reform on immigration that allows people work who want to work, then we are always going to have a problem with immigrants stealing our identities.

Immigrants are working low paying jobs that white America just doesn’t do: dishwashing, agricultural jobs, and anything that pays more than the average $10 wage that they will see in Mexico. The majority of Americans believe that illegal immigrants are taking jobs Americans do not want. Interestingly enough, 55% of white Americans even believe that immigrants work harder than themselves at low paying jobs.

Yet, the public still remains almost evenly divided on whether immigration overall is good for the country or not.

How exactly did a nation of immigrants grow to have such stiff restrictions on immigration?
